Serena Linley's shop, Chelsea, London
One afternoon, when oddly enough it was not raining, we were strolling through a Chelsea neighborhood, looking for a place to have a snack and rest our hot feet. If I had planned this it would not have happened. We emerged from a nice little café that had a back garden, having split a big fat crumbly brownie, and walked smack into Serena Linley's shop. Serena Linley is Viscountess Linley, the wife of the Viscount, David Linley, who is the nephew of The Queen. This was pretty heady stuff for someone who lives vicariously through the glossy monthlies Tatler and Vanity Fair. Serena Linley's shop is full of lovely-smelling bottles and pots and jars and flagons and bibelots and bars of soap. The Viscountess was nowhere to be seen. (There was the small matter of the Jubilee taking place, after all.) Which is just as well, otherwise I might have felt compelled to be polite and buy some of her lavender-scented Provençale unguents and lotions, which was money best saved for the next snack. Serena Linley's shopfront was covered with lattice and roses and hanging pots of old-fashioned scented geraniums and lobelia. The flowers must surely lure in shoppers who follow their noses. http://www.serenalinley.com/ (Quite possibly the most restrained website I have ever seen!) http://www.architecturaldigest.com/decor/archive/linley_slideshow_122005#slid slide=1
